The
Marca Trevigiana is often nicknamed the "Garden of Venice" for its lush landscape, dotted with Venetian villas, vineyards, hills, and picturesque villages. This garden was created and maintained by man, beginning with the significant land reclamation and irrigation works carried out by the Republic of Venice in the 1400s. The territory of the Marca thus became the garden of the lagoon city, producing meat, cereals, vegetables and especially wine for Venice.
As the years went by, the hinterland (lo stato da Tera) became increasingly important for the Venetian Patriciate, for whom it became an area of leisure and relaxation. Treviso became a kind of "court" for the Venetian nobility, who built elegant villas and residences in the city and its surrounding countryside.
